WHY MINIMAL?

As I am going to be producing quite an expensive magazine I feel it needs an expensive feel hence the reason I if making the magazine in real life would use a glued spine instead of staples and also it would be a glossy mag. Another thing I feel gives a magazine the quality edge is a minimal layout throughout that looks clean and neat. I have researched into existing magazines and found that some such as these work really well.

MINIMAL COVERS

A DPS analysis.

 

 This double page spread is the kind of look i aim for when producing my music magazine. I think the idea of having one picture covering half the spread is very good as the article doesn't look to overcrowded with writing. Something i can definitely take from this DPS is the use of a drop letter as it attracts the eye and makes the reader look more closely at the rest of the text. Also there photo has a caption which is good for me as i am incorporating fashion within my music magazine.The colour pallet here is black, orange and white which run through both pages of the double page spread. Another thing i like is the use of logo, page number and magazine website shown in the top right hand corner of the second page. In my final project this could fit in if i have enough space to use it wothout cramming the page with different aspects of text and images.

The text is written using two columns which is how i will write my article probably. I like that layout as breaks up the text but still fits in enough. above the text is a large empty space filled by just a few words which i think looks very good and appealing. Also if I were to use this format it would fit in very well with the minimal look i am going for with my magazine.

Analysis reflection

From the contents I analysed before i think i have decided that i want to replicate certain aspects of it such as the index down the left hand side. I would have to tweak the layout and create a more minimalistic feel for the page as my genre is quite different to NME and the target market are looking for a cleaner more expensive feel from this magazine. Something from the NME contents that i definitely wouldn't want to copy is the idea of have part of an article on the contents page as it appears crammed with text. I would rather have a single image covering much of the page with a small list of articles from sections in the magazine. I also think that the idea of a long title for the masthead is something i wont do, i will just have a simple logo that relates to all other areas of the magazine such as the cover and website/social networks.

• My idea to have a record on the cover would not work as it does not fit in with the genre of hip-hop.
• My choice of distributor needs to be looked into as it might need to be rather than an existing company.
• For my sales places i don't want to sell it anywhere people aren't already looking for it as it could attract the wrong market. 
• My target audience is a majority of males so i should try and aim for high mens fashion.
• My model has to look a bit roughed up/not to smart but can wear expensive branded clothing as well.
• My target audience mostly like the music for the music and not because of the artists looks and so on.
• The colours need to be bold and contrasting on my cover, probably black, white and red, blue or yellow.
• My audience is likely to download music so i need to incorporate online features and advertisements.     

From this i have learnt how to design my cover so that it attracts the right target market for my magazine.
